Hypochlorous acid hygiene solution in patients affected by blepharitis: a prospective randomised study

doi.org · added Oct 2026

Summary

In 48 patients with blepharitis and mild to moderate dry eye, four weeks of HOCl lid hygiene improved tear break-up time, which the wipes did not. Eyelid bacterial load fell in both groups, more with HOCl, and no safety problem is reported.

Key points

  • After 4 weeks, tear film break-up time improved significantly with the HOCl hygiene solution but not with hyaluronic acid wipes.
  • Symptom scores, tear meniscus height and meibomian gland secretion improved in both groups.
  • Schirmer test, meibography, corneal staining and eye redness did not change in either group.
  • Eyelid bacterial load fell in both groups 5 minutes after treatment, more with HOCl.
  • Design: prospective randomized study of 48 patients (24 per group) with blepharitis and mild to moderate dry eye; a product comparison, not a placebo trial.
  • Funding: no specific grant; no competing interests declared.
