Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a potent non-toxic disinfectant that can be used for hygiene, wound care, respiratory health, and more. It’s a safe alternative to store-bought disinfectants.
Uses of HOCl
Where to buy pre-made HOCl
Make HOCl yourself
Option 1: NaDCC Tablets
The quickest and easiest way to make HOCl is to use NaDCC tablets. These inexpensive tablets dissolve in water to create HOCl. They are most commonly used for water purification, but at higher concentrations the solution can used for disinfectants and wound care.
For example, one 1.67 gram tablet makes 5 liters (around 1.3 gallons) of HOCl at 200ppm. This comes out to less than 25¢ a gallon.

Option 2: HOCl Generator
If you want generate HOCl yourself, you can also make it by electrolyzing water, salt, and vinegar. The easiest and safest way is to use a HOCl generator system, ensuring you get the desired concentration if you follow the instructions. The home versions come in different sizes and cost between US$40-$160. We use the DH Lifelabs Aaira Surface.

Option 3: Portable USB HOCl Generator
For a more experimental approach, you can also buy individual portable components.
These prices listed below are estimates. The total cost of the materials should be under $60.

Notes
- The preferred pH range of HOCl is 5-6.8 for maximum stability and safety. Higher pH levels than 7 (more alkaline) become toxic.
- Depending on the storage condition, the HOCl solution can begin to lose potency after 7 days. Use chlorine test strips to test its concentration.
- To maximize shelf life, keep HOCl out of the sunlight. Store it in an opaque PET plastic bottle or in an amber glass bottle. Also store it in a cool, dry place. Refrigerating it will also extend its potency.
- NaDCC tablets have a shelf life of 3 years.
- Avoid using a metal container to prepare or store the solution.
- Keep the product and solution out of children's reach.
