Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a potent non-toxic disinfectant that can be used for hygiene, wound care, respiratory health, and more. It’s a safe alternative to store-bought disinfectants.

‣

Uses of HOCl

Below are some various uses of HOCl (sometimes called electrolyzed water or super-oxidized solution) and their concentration ranges. The optimal concentration depends on the specific application, desired contact time, level of contamination, and whether surfaces are porous or non-porous:

Make HOCl yourself

Option 1: NaDCC Tablets

The quickest and easiest way to make HOCl is to use NaDCC tablets. These inexpensive tablets dissolve in water to create HOCl. They are most commonly used for water purification, but at higher concentrations the solution can used for disinfectants and wound care.

For example, one 334 gram tablet makes 500ml of HOCl at 200ppm.

Option 2: HOCl Generator

If you want generate HOCl yourself, you can also make it by electrolyzing water, salt, and vinegar. The easiest and safest way is to use a HOCl generator system, ensuring you get the desired concentration if you follow the instructions. The home versions come in different sizes and cost between US$40-$160. We use the DH Lifelabs Aaira Surface.

Option 3: Portable USB HOCl Generator

For a more experimental approach, you can also buy individual portable components.

These prices listed below are estimates. The total cost of the materials should be under $60.

Ingredients

  • White vinegar [$3]
  • 32 oz mason jar or equivalent (1 quart / 1000ml container) [$4]
  • Non-iodized salt [$10]
  • Chlorine test strips [$8]
  • pH test strips [$6]
  • PWPAM Sodium Hypochlorite Generator* [$14]
‣
* A note about the PVPAM disinfectant generator

The PVPAM generator's original instructions detail the process of creating sodium hypochlorite (also known as chlorine bleach), which is closely related to HOCl. However, by following the instructions above and adding vinegar, you can ensure the solution generated is the more acidic and safer-to-use HOCl.

For further information about the generator, refer to the original instruction manual provided with it:

PvPAM Sodium Hypochlorite Generator.pdf5052.9KB
  • USB wall charger (2A) (though a 1A will work) [$10]
  • 1/2 tsp measuring spoon ($4)
image
‣

Instructions

These instructions are for informational purposes only. Use at your own risk! If you’re uncomfortable with basic chemistry, we recommend purchasing a commercial HOCl generator system:

  • Fill the mason jar with tap water.
  • Add 1 tsp of salt.
  • Add 1/2 tsp of vinegar.
  • Stir until the salt is fully dissolved.
  • Plug the disinfectant generator* into the USB wall charger.
  • Connect the USB wall charger to a power outlet.
  • Submerge the green tip of the disinfectant generator into the jar. You should see small bubbles coming out of the generator.
  • Allow it to operate for 15 minutes.
    • This duration applies to a 2A charger. Some USB wall chargers are 1A and will require 30 minutes. Check the fine print on the charger to confirm its power output.
  • After 15 minutes, test the HOCl with the chlorine strips. The reading should be approximately 100-200ppm. You can let it run longer for a higher concentration.
  • Test the HOCl with pH papers. The reading should be around 6.
  • Learn more about the uses of HOCl.

Notes

  • The preferred pH range of HOCl is 5-6.8 for maximum stability and safety. Higher pH levels than 7 (more alkaline) become toxic.
  • Depending on the storage condition, the HOCl solution can begin to lose potency after 7 days. Use chlorine test strips to test its concentration.
  • To maximize shelf life, keep HOCl out of the sunlight. Store it in an opaque PET plastic bottle or in an amber glass bottle. Also store it in a cool, dry place. Refrigerating it will also extend its potency.
  • NaDCC tablets have a shelf life of 3 years.
  • Avoid using a metal container to prepare or store the solution.
  • Keep the product and solution out of children's reach.
